What are allergies? - Allergy Symptoms - Causes & Treatments

Allergies have well known symptoms for the millions of people that suffer from them, this is a condition that for many people keeps them indoors during pollen season, stops them from eating certain foods or prevents them from owning a pet. Allergy symptoms are basically caused by and over production of histamine and the treatment for seasonal allergies and some other types of allergies is an antihistamine. Allergies to pollen are usually in the mild or moderate range, where food allergies are often in the moderate to severe range. When allergies are in the severe range they need immediate medication and will often require hospitalization. This is a condition that can start in childhood and continue on throughout adult life, or as the child ages they can outgrow the condition in some cases. The common allergens include pollen, mold, pet dander, dust and food. Insect bites can cause severe allergic reactions for some people and require the use of an Epi-Pen. Allergic reactions can be caused by items like jewelry, cosmetics, spices and other substances in some cases.

Allergies are not necessarily inherited, but if both parents have allergies then there is a more than average chance of the child being prone to allergies, although it might not be to the same allergen as the parents.

• Sneezing, along with itchy runny nose • Itchy watery eyes • Labored breathing or coughing • Headache • Skin rash • Hives • Wheezing • Itching in the throat

• Shortness of breath • Difficulty breathing • Wheezing • Stomach cramps • Vomiting • Diarrhea
